The picture, year by year.

On small screens, swipe charts and tables sideways to see all years.

Each point is a June snapshot; missing records are shown as gaps, not zero. Gold numbers below each year show the yearly change. Each chart uses its own vertical scale. Compare the labelled values, not line heights across charts.

Overall

Staff group

Charts are ordered by June 2026 Hong Kong headcount.

Medical grade

These charts break down the HCHS doctors staff group shown above. They show the same medical workforce by grade, such as Consultant, Specialty Registrar and Foundation Doctor.

These are not additional staff: do not add medical-grade counts to the HCHS doctors total. A person may hold more than one role, so grade headcounts may not sum exactly to the overall doctors headcount.

Share uses all staff in the same group, including staff with unknown nationality. Medical grades are subsets of doctors and should not be added to staff-group totals.

02 / CONTEXT & PROVENANCE

Read the numbers with context.

Who is counted?

The source category is “Hong Kong (British/Chinese)”. Nationality is self-reported and may reflect cultural heritage. It does not identify everyone born in Hong Kong or people with BN(O) visa status.

What does “NHS” cover?

Staff directly employed by NHS trusts and other core organisations in England. Primary care staff, including GP practice staff, are excluded. These figures do not represent the whole UK.

What can we compare?

Headcounts by staff group and available medical grade. Nursing pay bands are not available by Hong Kong nationality in these tables. Recording changes can affect trends, and people with multiple roles can appear in more than one group.

A source for every year

2016–2025 are historical records in the consolidated June 2025 workbook; 2026 comes from the June 2026 release.

Calculation, missing records & source traceability

Hong Kong share = Hong Kong headcount ÷ all-nationality headcount for the same date and group × 100. A missing Hong Kong row is shown as “Not listed” and no percentage is calculated. Explicit zero values remain zero.

The downloadable Excel contains the source publication URL, original workbook, worksheet and cell addresses for every extracted record. Historical doctor labels have been standardised for comparison. These are snapshots of staff in post, not annual recruitment or immigration counts.
